Online Coding & AI Classes for Kids in Germany: A 2026 Parent's Guide
Germany is Europe's engineering heart and yet, for most children here, computer science is still something that happens to them rather than something they do. Whether Informatik is compulsory, optional, or barely present depends almost entirely on which Bundesland you live in and which school type your child attends. This guide is for parents in Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Stuttgart, Düsseldorf and beyond — German and international families alike — working out how to give a child real coding and AI skills outside school hours.
One thing up front, so you are not surprised later: our classes are taught in English, not German. For international-school families, expat families, and German families who actively want their child working in English — the language they will read documentation and use AI tools in anyway — that is usually a benefit. If you need instruction in German, a local Informatik tutor is the better fit, and we would rather tell you that here than after you have paid.
The Real State of Computer Science in German Schools
Education in Germany is a state matter, and it shows. Some Bundesländer have made Informatik a compulsory subject at secondary level; others leave it as an elective, or fold a little of it into maths and general studies. Two children the same age in Bavaria and in a neighbouring state can have completely different exposure to programming. The Digitalpakt Schule funding improved hardware and connectivity considerably, but hardware is not curriculum — interactive whiteboards do not teach a child to write a loop.
Even where Informatik exists, it tends to be theoretical and starts late. The practical reality for most families: a child in Grundschule gets essentially no programming, and a child in Gymnasium may meet real code for the first time around age 14–15, in a class of thirty, with limited hands-on time.
None of that is a criticism of German teachers, who are working inside timetables they did not write. But it does mean the answer to "will school handle this?" is, for most children, no — not to any depth, and not early enough to matter for confidence.
Class Times: How This Actually Works From Germany
Most online coding schools marketed to European families are run from the US or the UK. That creates a familiar problem: a 4 PM class in California is 1 AM in Berlin, and even UK-based schedules tend to be built around British school hours rather than yours.
We teach from India, which is 3.5 hours ahead of Germany in summer (CEST) and 4.5 hours ahead in winter (CET). That works out well: our teaching evening is your late afternoon. German families get proper after-school slots, taught live, rather than the leftovers of an American timetable.

We confirm the exact Berlin-time start before enrolment, and we adjust when Germany changes to and from summer time — you should not have to do the arithmetic.
Ask any provider you are considering one blunt question: "What is the exact German start time of the live class, on which days, and what happens when the clocks change?" A vague answer tells you they have not really thought about European families.
What German Parents Ask That Others Do Not
1. "What about my child's data?"
German families ask about privacy far more than families elsewhere, and rightly so. Reasonable questions for any provider: what personal data do you collect about my child, is the class recorded and if so who can see it, is the platform GDPR-compliant, and can I have the data deleted? We collect only what is needed to run the class and contact you, and a parent can ask us to delete it. Any provider that gets vague at this question deserves your suspicion.
2. "Is this just more screen time?"
A fair concern in a country that takes childhood screen exposure seriously. The honest distinction is not hours but direction: a child consuming short-form video and a child building a game are doing categorically different things with the same device. One is being fed content; the other is producing it, debugging it, and explaining it to someone. We wrote about where that line sits in how much screen time is too much.
3. "Will this help with Informatik or the Abitur?"
Indirectly, and substantially. We do not teach to a Bundesland syllabus — there are sixteen of them. What we teach is the foundation every syllabus assumes: loops, conditions, functions, data structures, and real Python. A student who has written Python for six months walks into school Informatik already fluent in the part most classmates find hardest, and only has to learn the exam framing.
4. "My child's English is not perfect."
In practice this is a much smaller obstacle than parents expect, and often turns into a second benefit. Code itself is English — if, while, print — and small batches mean a teacher can slow down and rephrase. What Local Options Cost, and What You Get
Germany has good local alternatives and we would rather compare honestly than pretend otherwise.
Local coding schools and holiday camps. Several established providers run courses in the larger cities, typically charging somewhere in the region of €25–40 per session, or a few hundred euro for a holiday camp week. In-person, German-language, and genuinely good — particularly for younger children and for robotics with physical kits.
School AGs and clubs. Many schools run a voluntary Arbeitsgemeinschaft, sometimes robotics or coding. Free, and worth taking. Usually limited to an hour a week, often run by a teacher whose main subject is something else, and it stops during holidays.
Volunteer initiatives. Networks like CoderDojo and Hacker School operate in German cities, generally free or very cheap. Excellent introductions run by volunteers, though availability, continuity and level vary a lot by city.
Live online with a professional engineer. Where we sit. Our advice, sincerely: if there is a free CoderDojo near you, take your child. Then, if they get hooked and want to go past the introduction — which is where volunteer sessions usually end — come and look at a structured course.
City by City
Berlin. The largest startup and tech scene in the country, and a very international parent population. English-language classes are normal here rather than unusual, and plenty of families are already raising children bilingually.
Munich & Stuttgart. Engineering and automotive heartland, with large Indian, American and international communities around the big employers. Parents here tend to be exactly the people who know what these skills are worth — many write software themselves.
Frankfurt & Düsseldorf. Finance, consulting and one of Europe's largest Japanese and Indian expat populations. International school families are usually already working in English, so the language question simply does not arise.
Hamburg, Cologne, Leipzig, and smaller towns. The further from a major city, the thinner the local options get, especially past beginner level. This is where live online teaching closes a real gap rather than just saving a drive.

Red Flags to Avoid
- Recorded video sold as "live". Ask directly: is a human teacher present in every single class?
- Vague answers about data and recordings. In Germany especially, you are entitled to a clear answer. Take an unclear one seriously.
- Long contracts with automatic renewal. A well-known frustration here. Check the cancellation terms before, not after.
- Class times quoted in someone else's timezone, or no answer about what happens when the clocks change.
- "Your child will build an app in 30 days." They will build something small and real. Anyone promising more is selling hype.

The Bottom Line for Parents in Germany
Germany builds extraordinary physical things, and it is now rebuilding a great deal of that industry around software and AI. Your child will enter that job market whether or not school gets round to teaching them Informatik properly — and in most Bundesländer, on current timetables, it will not do so early enough to shape whether they think of themselves as someone who can build things.
